Using FTP to upload files.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is what allows you to transfer files from your system (client) to your Web site (server), when you are not using an integrated HTML editor such as FrontPage. There are many FTP programs available, however, we recommend using WS_FTP to administer your uploads. You will also need to unzip the program prior to using it.

Once you are connected to the Internet:

  1. Open WS_FTP
  2. Enter your domain name or IP address in the "host name address" box. This address will be the location of your files.
  3. Enter your Username
  4. Enter your Password
  5. In the left window, select the files from your disk or hard drive that you are going to upload.
  6. Set the correct transfer mode at the top. All Web page files must be uploaded in ASCII, while all programs must be uploaded in Binary.
  7. Your home page must be named default.htm, default.asp, index.htm, index.cfm or index.html
  8. Be sure to place all of your Internet files in the "wwwroot/" directory.
  9. Choose the button on your FTP program that connects or "sends" your files. You should get a confirmation of transfer, and if successful, you can check by typing your domain name or IP address into your browser.

  4. Select your local Web
  5. Click Open in the Open Web window.
  6. Click the Publish button in the in the upper left hand corner.
  7. The Publish Web window will open.
  8. At web address type, type in your domain name.
  9. Click Publish.
  10. Type in your user name and password, when the Name and Password window appears. FrontPage should begin publishing your site.

If you wish to publish to a subdirectory on your web site, for example http://www.myweb.com/subdir/, simply type the entire URL to which you wish to publish. This will create a Child Web.

FAQ's

  1. When I type www.mydomain.xxx into my browser my site does not come up? But when I put in the IP address, it works. Why?
When we registered or transferred your domain name, the process is not complete on the same day. It usually takes 2 to 3 business days for your domain name to propogate throughout all DNS servers, including ours.
  2. When I type my domain name or IP address in my browser I get a 1.0 403 Access Forbidden error message. Why?
This means that the server can not find your default.htm or index.htm file. Make sure you have uploaded that file.
  3. Am I able to resell some of my space?
Yes. You can resell part of your space to others at your leisure. However, this space can NOT have a unique domain name associated with it. The URL will look something like this; www.yourdomain.com/theirdomain.
  4. How do I set up files to be placed on Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)?
You need to create a folder in your root directory called "Secure". Place the files in that folder. Go to the technical support request form located at http://www.ictks.com/support.html and submit your request to our technical department. They will enter your directory and place the folder on the SSL
  5. What happens when my account goes over the storage or transfer limits?
You will be responsible for all overages with your account. The fees for storage over the limits is $.95 per MB. The fees for transfer over the limit is $.15 per MB. If you feel you are going to go over your limits, please contact us and discuss upgrading to a higher plan.
